“Ninety-eight percent?” I hold up my phone like it’s evidence in a trial. “Tell me GeneMatch is broken.”

Jamie Cole doesn’t even blink. He leans back in his chair—too relaxed, too smug—like the universe didn’t just make the worst joke of my life. “It’s not broken, Rivers. It’s science.”

“Science clearly hasn’t met you,” I say. “You’re the human equivalent of an untagged email. Chaos in a pretty wrapper.”

His mouth twitches, amused. “And you’re a walking spreadsheet. Color-coded. Categorized. Probably alphabetized.”

“I’m organized.”

“You’re one push notification away from a meltdown.”

I glare at him, but my pulse is doing something completely unprofessional. This is the problem with Jamie: he’s infuriating—and somehow still dangerous in the way he looks at me, like he already knows how this ends.

My screen lights up again.
